Jesse stood on his best friend’s front step, dressed in what he thought was his best shirt; a black shirt that had seen many nights with John. Jesse took a deep breath and knocked, running a hand through his short curly hair that his mother had made him cut earlier in the week. He made a face, patting his chest as the front door open, and there stood John, still in his school uniform.

Jesse smiled and pushed his way in, leaving John to close the door. He slipped his shoes off, placing them properly by the door as John started heading upstairs; after years of this, it had become routine.

Jesse closed the door to John’s room, something which was not routine. John raised an eyebrow as Jesse shook his head. “Jess?”

Another shake. “Just, lemme talk, okay?”

John nodded again, and Jesse took a shaky breath, reaching his hand in his back pocket. He handed John the card dotted with hearts. He blushed as he mumbled a quick “for you” and looked down.

John looked over the card, confusion clear. “But Jess…We’re May. This is a…a Valentine’s Day card.”

Jesse nodded, sitting timidly on the edge of John’s bed. He looked up, “Happy belated Valentine’s Day?”

“Jesse?”

There was a pause as John waited for Jesse.

“I, uh, I was scared, okay?”

John nodded and sat down next to Jesse. He pecked his cheek. “Thanks Jesse.”

Jesse’s cheeks turned pink.
